Although I have already dedicated this book to them, I would like to ac-
knowledge the two people who made this book possible.

First, my poetic mentor and number one fan, Valerie Bailey. Without her
continual encouragement for me to write, and her assistance in editing and pub-
lishing this book, it would not have happened. She has mentored me and taught
me what I know about poetry. Without her kind and longsuffering tutelage, none
of this would have been possible.

Second, my physician and dear friend, Rodney Carry. He literally saved
my life, and he keeps me sane. Without him, I would not be here, and I never
would have had the opportunity to write this book.
