out the side of the jeep. Things couldn’t have gotten much worse and fortunately
they didn’t. Two hours later, I reached my truck and the dogs. The first thing they
did after greeting me was to make yellow holes in the snow. After their relief, I
put them in the jeep, called dad on the cell phone at the top of the hill (the only
place the phone worked). I was checking in to tell him I had arrived safely, and
had put the dogs and my gear in the cabin. After starting a fire in the fireplace,
I changed clothes, fed the dogs, and ate two cans of hot stew. Exhaustion from
my climb, the ordeal of digging out the jeep twice, and getting dad to safety
made me feel as if I had completed a triathlon or a hundred mile bike ride. I was
weary to the bone, but exhilarated at the same time. I had climbed a mountain
in a blizzard, gotten my dad to safety, and now I was safe and content in a warm
cabin with my faithful dogs by my side. Tomorrow would be a new day with
new challenges to face in trying to get back to town. In fact, it took another two
days with many daunting predicaments to resolve, but at that moment, life was
good, and I was glad to be alive.
